Community-Based Instruction
This classroom provides opportunities for students to engage with their community to learn new things and to develop independence skills. Some places that we visit in the community are:
-Rocklin Library
-Walmart, Safeway
-Rocklin Laundry
-Sierra College
-Recology Waste Management
-Nimbus Fish Hatchery
-Volunteering at 180 Church in Rocklin
-Gardening opportunities
-AMF Bowling
-Galleria Mall
-Dream Theatre
Our classroom utilizes public transportation for things in town- more specifically Placer County Transit. Students are accompanied by staff members and learn valuable skills such as keeping time and following a schedule, greeting/communicating with bus drivers, awareness of surroundings, keeping track of district-provided bus passes, and paying for their fares! The Placer County Transit is a clean, reliable way to teach students how to practice independence and help them get to where they need to go. Plus, the bus drivers are awesome!
For trips out of town, we utilize RUSD vans and buses through the RUSD Transportation Department.
Classroom Instruction
Classroom Instruction
This transition class has a primary focus on teaching independent living skills, employment skills, communication skills, and behavior skills.
We work closely with district service providers to create a rich learning environment that molds well-rounded habits. Services provided to students are outlined in each student's IEP, however on-going collaboration between teachers, aides, and service providers ensure that all students benefit from evidence-based practices in a multitude of disciplines.
We offer traditional academic training such as mathematics skills, sight word practice, literacy skills, and executive functioning skills. We also offer as much hands-on instruction as possible to make classroom learning relevant to the world outside of the structured school day.
Sierra College
Kinesiology
Sierra College offers opportunities for our students to join them for PE! The class we enroll in is Kinesiology 0802, otherwise known as Adapted Motor Skills. The class is either held on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The class is led by Mr. Wayne Barbee, who has been teaching for many years. He has excellent rapport with our students and works hard to modify the class to meet all ability levels.
Students dress up/down in the classroom before leaving for the college and then take the bus or a district van to the college. While in class students participate in a number of physical sports and activities including:
Running
Sprinting
Stretching
Basketball
Frisbee
Dodgeball
Baseball
etc.
The class is composed of a plethora of programs around Placer County including other Rocklin Transition classes, Auburn Transition, and Roseville Transition.
Students are encouraged to follow peer prompting as well as staff and adult prompting, presenting a great inclusion opportunity.
Expenses/Donations
Expenses
Though this class does not have a cost associated with enrollment, we do participate in many community outings that have costs. I ask that each student contributes $20 in cash each month. The cash aspect allows me to split up costs of large purchases (groceries, eating out, class/group projects, etc.). Each credit and debit to your students "account" is recorded and any money that is unused will be returned at the end of the year. All cash is kept in a locked cash box with the teacher- only the head teacher has access to the cash/records.
Donations
We are always looking for items to improve our classroom! If you are looking to donate, please take a look at our Wish Lists:
If you'd like to donate other items, contact Rachel and we can talk about what the classroom could use!!
